Birds Have The Ability to Remember Faces (Face Recognition Ability)

When you think about who has the ability to recognize and remember faces, you might think of answers such as people, children, dogs and cats. If you really put in a little effort into the question, you may conclude that dolphins can recognize people. Sharks probably not; they will simply eat anyone. Seals - who knows? Insects, probably not.
But what about birds?
Well, just think about whether or not birds can recognize members of their own family. Sure, there is scent involved to a certain extent, but birds do have the ability to recognize faces and remember them.
Ask any gardener who has had fruit trees and you'll learn the truth. Birds will remember who came after them with a broom to shoe them away from their most precious fruit trees.
To test this theory, all you have to do is shoe them out of your trees three or four times. The next time you come out of the house, do it without a broom. Then watch what happens.
What will happen is the birds will scatter whenever you step out of the house and start walking towards the fruit tree.
Actually, this isn't a theory. It's a tested fact that birds have face recognition ability. Researchers in the field of face recognition have known it for decades. However, the researchers do not know how to erase a bird's memory of your face. So what that means is that once a bird connects you with its very survival, you're pretty much doomed.
So far, no research studies have been performed where people were disguised and then went out walking towards the fruit trees to see what would happen. So we don't know if the pesty little critters can see through disguises. But if you are one of those who the birds have already tagged as their new enemy, you may want to try some awfully big sunglasses and a big hat. In fact, a hat collection may help.
That's because the average person cannot even recognize people they know when the person is wearing sunglasses and a big hat that obscures a large portion of the face.
It's sad, but the average adult's face recognition skills are only equal to that of a sixth grader!
And as for the birds, well, they haven't been graded yet!
Scientists are still interested in the fact that birds do have this recognition ability though and will continue researching it.
But in the meantime, let's think about the opposite situation. If the birds can recognize you in the garden, can you recognize them? Can you really see their individual differences?
Learning the art of face recognition is fun when you do it one step at a time. Once you learn how to recognize faces with top level identification skills, you can begin to notice the fine and intricate details in the animal and bird world, too. And that's when the beauty of life unfolds right before your eyes, with every face. Find out more at http://www.whowasthatperson.com
